This is an experiment to try and leave Google groups behind, and host our own discussion list/forum. The upside of moving to a self-hosted solution is that we aren’t dependent on Google anymore (which has been doing things like requiring a google account to sign up for the list, and is rather well known for randomly discontinuing services), and that we are using a modern, actively developed platform, rather than a system that seems to be only minimally maintained.
The downside is, of course, that I have to host a complex system on my dingy virtual machine, and there will no doubt be the occasional problem with server stability and email being marked as spam.
